Animals don’t need to make New Year Resolutions—they are perfect as they are—but as pet owners, what can we vow to do in 2018 to make a difference?
Here are some ideas:
Walk more. As dog owners, sometimes we get into the habit of taking our dog out to the same ol’ places. And we can shorten walks, especially at the time of year. We just want it over and done with! But dogs love exploring new routes. There are so many wonderful things to smell. It also gives you the opportunity to see something different.
Think diet. Sadly, our cats and dogs are getting fatter. Just as the case it with human beings, cats and dogs’ health suffers if they weigh more than they should. Extra weight will affect their movement and their joints, and it puts them at risk of heart disease and diabetes. If your pet is overweight, ask your vet for his or her recommendations. You might want to look at portion sizes and reduced calorie pet food.
Think about giving a home to a shelter animal. Perhaps 2018 is the year you’ve decided to get a pet? Please consider a rescue animal. There are shelters up and down the UK that are full of animals that are there through no fault of their own.
Incorporate more grooming and play. Dogs and cats both benefit from regular play and brushing. Grooming keeps their coats smooth and glossy and allows you to check for fleas. Play will create a bond with your dog, and it will use a cat’s natural instincts.
Donate to our pet parcels. The Donni Doo Foundation helps animal shelters by donating monthly boxes. The packages have treats, toys and accessories in them, to help cats and dogs feel a little more at home in the shelter until they find their forever home. If you can contribute to this project, we’ll be so grateful! You can find out more here.
